Renowned Bollywood designer Manish Malhotra, celebrated for his 34-year career as a top costume stylist, lacks a formal fashion design degree but embraces a perpetual student mindset.
“In 2023, I enrolled in a tailored program at the New York Film Academy. At 55, I was that student attending classes for eight hours and then studying at home… It’s never too late to learn,” shared Malhotra in an interview with Gulf News.
Having crafted wedding ensembles for stars like Kareena Kapoor Khan and Kiara Advani, Malhotra initially felt apprehensive about returning to student life. Still, it recalled his habit of listening to even the youngest interns, often at the bottom of corporate hierarchies.
“It’s never too late to find inspiration. It’s never too late to embark on something new… The fear of failure persists, but my passion for learning surpasses all,” Malhotra affirmed.

During the interview, Manish Malhotra welcomed us to his elegant namesake store at Dubai Mall. The interiors, designed by Gauri Khan, a close friend and wife of superstar Shah Rukh Khan, took a year to complete.
“Dubai feels like a second home, and I envisioned this space as the starting point for my global journey… I wanted a blend of modern luxury with an Indian palace ambiance, complete with intricate carvings and chandeliers. Gauri Khan, a dear friend who understands my vision, and I, two artists in perfect synergy… She also worked on my study at home in Mumbai,” Malhotra explained.
For him, launching in the UAE was a deliberate step towards a global presence.
“Dubai holds a special place in my heart. I first visited in 1999 for a wedding shopping spree and later opened my store on Jumeirah Beach Road in 2005 (later known as Studio 8)… My journey with Dubai has been long and inspiring. Every visit brings something new and fabulous,” he shared.
Reflecting on his enduring success and appeal, especially after styling Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s pre-wedding attire, Malhotra attributed it to his unwavering passion.
“I simply love what I do… It’s been 34 years in movies and 19 years with my brand… As I approach 35 years in films and 20 with my brand next year, it calls for celebration. But I’m always evolving, learning more each day at work. I’ve had the privilege to collaborate across generations – from Sridevi to Janhvi, Chunkey Pandey to Ananya Panday… I’m always eager to hear their perspectives,” Malhotra noted.
Acknowledging the challenges of his profession, particularly in films like ‘Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani’ with Alia Bhatt, he admitted, “It’s not an easy field, but I thrive on the work.”

“You have to put in many extra hours, and it’s a lot of work sometimes. It’s a lot of stress,, and things go wrong, but you immediately think of how you can do better. The journey has to go on,” said Malhotra.
So, what kind of a fashion moment are we having right now?
“We are having a very inclusive fashion moment. There’s a lot of love for textile. We are also seeing a big movement of designers doing so much work with international celebrities. The world is now looking at India for style, workmanship, embroidery … Earlier the international houses got their workmanship done in India, but today they are looking at us for style. It’s a great moment to be a fashion designer.”
He’s also a big fan of evolution and re-invention. Malhtora, apart from being on the speed-dial of Bollywood A-listers, has also dipped his feet into film production.
“I have already produced three films … Today, people don’t look at me as a costume designer to films alone … Each aspect of my journey needs a lot of work and detailing and I am up for it. I have done high-end jewelry too.”
But it all began with his love for Bollywood musicals.
“Bollywood movies have always had a big influence on me. Whether it’s watching colour on screen, music on screen, the actors/actresses on the big screen … I was one of the first people to see potential in getting respectability to a costume designer and stylist … While it took me time to understand mainstream cinema, and I got a lot of criticism along the way for my use of sequins and showstoppers, I knew I always had an eye for the future.” And he agrees that a degree and a formal education would have made his path easier.

“Education certainly has its merits. There were times when I missed having it because I had to make many mistakes before getting things right… I was born with an intense passion for movies and clothing, constantly sketching, but back then, there was no social media to showcase our work. We had to put in much more effort… While education is crucial, anything creative demands heart, and I have an abundance of that.”
